I AM ALIVE!

June 19th, 2009

Hellllooooo…

I’ve been offline for a few weeks now and it has actually been quite a liberating experience. I’m having fun here in Cambodia. My base of operations has been my uncle’s (dad’s younger bro) house… which is situated right next to a prison! Meeting relatives that I have never met before has been wonderful. Everyone is extremely kind to me and they all take care of me because I’m such a wuss. My lower legs were covered with red spots that were assumed to be mosquito bites. It turned out to be some kinda allergic reaction or something. Apparently it is quite common with people who come here. My sister had the same thing. I went to a clinic, got a shot along with some meds, and I’ve gotten much better. The bad thing is that I am a big time scratcher and because of that I have quite a few scars now.

My buddies Carlos and Fancy made it here safely after some complications with their flights. Everything is more enjoyable when your friends are with you. I am currently in Siem Reap with my mom, two cousins, and Carlos+Fancy. We spent the day checking out the temples at Angkor, then hit the Night Market, and finished off with some grub on the street.

I’m just backing up photos right now and don’t know what else to write so… PEACE!

I promise to try and think of something interesting to post!

Less Than An Hour To Go

May 29th, 2009

It’s getting closer to departure time. I’m really quite impressed by the design of the airport. This is my first time at the international portion of it, and I think it looks wonderful. There are these flourescent lights hanging at different heights and angles. I’m not sure if it is intentional or if they have just naturally started shift/sag, but I it makes the lighting much more interesting than having them all at the same height and angle. I really love the hanging metalwork piece that I’m looking at right now. It depicts a school small fish spiraling upwards… reminds me of underwater footage that you’d typically see on a nature show.

I’m getting sleepy. I spent the whole day making final preparations. I went and got my shots, bought gifts for family members and even took a shower, but I still managed to forget to buy a memory card reader and my favourite batteries: Maha Powerex 2700mah AA’s.

Well I have to go pee… I’ll write again when I get a chance. Peace.

Chillin’ At YVR

May 28th, 2009

I’m just sitting standing here at the food court waiting to board. The flight is at 12:55AM! This is so boring, but I’m glad we came early to check in because after about twenty minutes of waiting in line, a large hoard of 50-60 people showed up. I was slightly disappointed that the weight limit for a carry-on is 7kg. My camera bag is about 11-12kg!

Here’s some PhotoBooth fun.

I’m going-going… back-back to…

May 27th, 2009

CAMBODIA!!!?

I am going to Cambodia for the first time since immigrating to Canada all those years ago. It’s going to be quite interesting for me since I’ve never really gone anywhere. Being an introvert by nature, I prefer familiar sights/smells/sounds, travelling the usual routes, and doing the usual things. All the new stuff I’m going to experience on this trip is going to make my head explode! If it doesn’t, I’m sure the heat will get me. It looks like I’ll be coming home much browner than I am now. In all seriousness though, there will many opportunities for me to learn about my own culture and where I come from–something that even a dumb-ass like myself can appreciate. If I don’t learn anything, at least I’ll get to tingle my tastebuds with a veritable cornucopia of gastronomic delights! Ah yes, the ’sweet’ smell of Cambodian Cheese

Something that makes this journey extra special is the fact that I will be joined by my best friend Carlos (don’t be jealous Fronda) and my coolest friend Fancy (don’t be jealous Fronda) in mid-June. We’ve had occasional impromptu Khmer training sessions over the past few weeks and I think that they have been picking up the language quite well. Although, I’m not too certain how far Carlos is going to get with “Hello. My name is Mr. Cat!”

At least we will make cool pictures!

PEACE.
